In July 2018 portuguese police detained 16 people suspected of cardsharing that is sharing secret card keys of one or more cards decoding the signal over the Internet. Cardsharing is a serious threat to the current pay-TV model because some client may choose to use cheaper piracy service instead of a legitimate one.

The Leiria department identified and caught the 45-year-old man. He was charged with computer fraud and unlawful sharing of the TV signal by using cardsharing software. The police also checked the men’s house and found various electronic devices that enabled him to access and share television signal. The devices were seized and the suspect was arrested. Illegal activities were carried out in the Abrantes region.
