The federal government of Australia will address search engines, extending the campaign for Internet piracy. It will make it difficult for Australians to download pirated movies and music.

According to applicable regulations introduced in 2015, copyright owners may apply for a federal court decision that requires Internet service providers to block access to infringing sites. The new regulations’ propose to extend this scope so that applicants can also submit a request to order search engines such as Google and Yahoo to remove piracy websites from SERP completely or at least lower their rank.

According to the regulations, these websites have the “main purpose or main effect” of copyright infringement. The new rules would also allow copyright holders to more easily have piracy websites blocked in the country. (ns)
