Some European artists and press publishers have demanded changes to the copyright of the network, and some global IT corporations have opposed it. On voting were 438 MEPs in favor, 226 against and 39 abstained.
The new directive aims to make artists earn more on sharing music online, and reduce Internet piracy. Various authors appealed to the MEPs to support the directive, including Jean-Noel Tronc, vice president of the European association of GESAC artists. “Artists need to be able to create and be rewarded for it. Today, 95 percent of the online advertising market in Poland belongs to Google. ” he said in an interview with the Polish Radio.
It took many months to come to an agreement on this matter. MEPs had to vote over 200 amendments to the project.
